INTERVIEW
"theo theo theo. he's got the face of an angel, no? it's deceptive, he's deeply deceptive. he was such a sweet boy. he had all the time in the world for anyone who asked, always had a smile on his face. he was such a sunny personality. then he hit his teens, and i hate to admit this, but i think it was that sunny disposition that led him astray. i would bet my life that it was his eagerness to please caspian that led to him getting in all that trouble. he took it very personally when his father sent him to that awful place, my poor little theo. it broke my heart to have to send him off, but what could we do? he almost cost his father his job! unfortunately, since he turned eighteen he has not been my sweet little boy any longer. he's very jaded, hard, cold. there isn't a thing i wouldn't do to get my theo back."
alethea galis, fifty
"my poor auntie alethea, my cousins are such a handful. they're a bit of gruesome twosome, theo and caspian. even when we were little kids they'd flare up over stupid things, and they fought like rabid dogs! yes yes yes, all brothers fight, i know, but not like these two. they wouldn't hold back, grabbing whatever they could to use as weapons, but they were still thick as thieves. unfortunate wording there, knowing what they get up to. i still think theo is at core a good person, though. he's always been easily led by caspian, but under it all, he has this passionate drive to please people. that's why i wasn't as surprised as everyone else was when i found out he was a firefighter - he wants to do good, no matter what skewed perspective his history and attitude portray."
andrea manoussos, cousin
"oh theodore, what a mixed up young man. i had just gone through a messy divorce when i stumbled across the eighteen year old theo in a cafe, sipping an americano and idly pushing his hair out of those baby blues. he was all innocence-- what a false representation! fresh off the plane from greece, he admitted to me that he was staying in a grotty hotel, despite having the money to stay somewhere else. i was charmed. we had a whirlwind relationship that saw him moving in with me, treating me to surprise trips to paris and expensive dinners. he was a real charmer, exactly what i needed after my ex husband left me so wounded. not all was perfect though, and he had some real difficulties with my eldest son - whom, i must confess, is two years older than theo - and after they got in a particularly vicious fight i had to call it off. he's a wild card, to put it tamely."
sophia laurent, forty-five
"theodore was a classic example of a student who had all the parts but none of the instructions. he truly had the capacity for brilliance when he properly applied himself, and he had a real flare for both languages and history, two challenging disciplines. he made the biggest mistake of his life following in the footsteps of that brother of his, such wasted potential is exactly what i wish to limit in my profession. at around sixteen theo started to tread the wrong path, and no matter how much i pleaded with him to re-evaluate his priorities, he was determined to fritter his intelligence away."
aeneas apostolou, sixty-eight
"when i signed up to be a firefighter, do you think i expected to be fightin' alongside a jumped up greek kid like theo? course not, but i'm sure as hell glad i do. theo's got a wicked sense of humor, and let me tell you, that comes in pretty fucking handy when you're doin' somethin' as weighty as we do. he's got balls, theo, big fucking balls. we're always rippin' the shit out of him for bein' such a pretty boy, but he works like the rest of us, gets his kicks out of adversity the same way we do. he's hinted a bit that he's not got such a squeaky clean past, but i can tell you from my heart of hearts, he's more than made up for it with the good work he's done for this city. he's still growing up, he'll get his shit together."
harry swofford, twenty-five
"what an asshole. theo dated one of my best friends, and i'm still so sure things were rough between them, rougher than she makes out. she admits he was hard on her, really possessive. i've seen him switch myself! sure, he's charming enough when you're talking to him and he's not had too much to drink, knows when to compliment you and when to keep his mouth shut, but guys like that are a dime a dozen. but boy was he jealous. and not just jealous like, 'don't flirt with other guys' jealous, but jealous like he'd beat the shit out of a guy who accidentally brushed against her jealous. i think at first she was flattered, but i know he'll have lost it with her too. if things were stormy in public you can damn well bet they're a fuckload worse behind closed doors. i wouldn't wish him on anyone."
kerry o'flaherty, twenty
PERSONAL
but really, i am... everything my father is not.
and i live by... "man, supposing you and i, escaping this battle, would be able to live on forever, ageless, immortal, so neither would i myself go on fighting in the foremost, nor would i urge you into the fighting where men win glory. but now, seeing that the spirits of death stand close about us in their thousands, no man can turn aside or escape them, let us go on and win glory for ourselves, or yield it to others."
