INTERVIEW
"astrid has always been a curious child, and i mean that in the kindest way possible. she's not very alike anyone else in the sense that i can't get a grip as to where her head is. she's a bit strange, you see. she's intelligent, but she never applies herself to what she should - everything she knows is irrelevant to life. ask her about politics and she'll give you a blank stare, but the moment you bring up films, she'll never stop. it's the same for many other things. she knows what she likes, what she hates, and what she has a tolerance for. she's very opinionated, she is, but sometimes, i wonder as to what's going through that mind of hers. she's outrageously creative, what with writing being her profession, but i don't think she's got a truly firm grasp on reality."
penélope machiavelli, forty-six
"blurb about the character from the point of view of a sibling or other relative."
lila machiavelli, sister
"we met through work, you see. she was this beautiful girl that i couldn't get my eyes off of, but she never gave me the time of day. whenever i'd try to speak to her, she'd brush me off, make some nonchalant comment about the weather and then rush off to the nearest café to do writing. she's really strange, but in this fascinating way that i just couldn't get over. there's a very fine line between her reality and her imagination and sometimes, i think it gets crossed, but she always comes back, even if it takes a while and leaves her a bit odd. she writes a lot, too, you know. she based a screenplay off of herself once, but it was really weird. like... a bret easton ellis novel, right? really sexualized and dangerous, which is the complete opposite of how she is in actuality."
alfie rosen, twenty-five
"we worked on a film together. it didn't do well with mainstream audiences, but it did magnificently at the toronto film festival and cannes too. that's beside the point, though. she's a real wonder, that girl. the things that come out of her mind - those thoughts - i just could never understand where everything came from. her style is really different, unlike what you'd expect from her, and i wonder where she draws her inspiration from. half the scenarios she comes up with, the dialog she writes, i could never even imagine transpiring in real life, but she makes it work. she has a way of worming her way into reality with her fanatical thoughts and aspirations. it's really wonderful, however strange."
jackson heinrich, forty
"god, i've known astrid for years. like, literal years. i think we were eleven when we met, so it's been over a decade. shocking, right? but she's a great girl. really different, but also not, you know? she's got that different way of speaking, of holding herself, but you never get that sense of distinct strangeness from her. she's just not like everyone else. a real breath of fresh air. it's a bit hard to deal with her, though, when i'm trying to give her good news. when i got married to henry, she was so remote. i tried to hug her and she nearly broke my arm off. it's hard, being her best friend, but i wouldn't have it any other way. she's just got a lot of complications. that's the beauty of her, though."
juliet st. onge, twenty-two
"she's really fucking weird, and i'm not saying that lightly. like, i'm in the film business. i know weird people, trust me, but she's got serious issues. we'd always invite her out for drinks, for dinner parties, and the like, but she'd never accept our offers. i never saw her out with anyone - hell, she would never go within five feet of someone. like, what's her issue, right? i always wondered about that and i tried to be a good person, find out and everything, and she right freaked. i grabbed her hand one day when she was leaving and she turned on me and i swear to god, i was scared for my life. she looked livid, right? but it wasn't just that. her entire posture changed and it was like staring at someone i had never known, not even in the months we worked together."
hanne borroughs, twenty-one
PERSONAL
but really, i am... unreal in every way.
and i live by... "i've always been an ironic dreamer, unfaithful to my inner promises. like a complete outsider, a casual observer of whom i thought i was, i've always enjoyed watching my daydreams go down in defeat. i was never convinced of what i believed in. i filled my hands with sand, called it gold, and opened them up to let it slide through. words were my only truth. when the right words were said, all was done; the rest was the sand that had always been."
